Papers, 1870-1878.

Lieutenant from Ind. in the 24th U.S. Infantry; given an honorable discharge in 1870. Papers refer to Iliff's attempts to be reinstated into the army on his assertion that he was originally wrongly accused by a colonel of being "worthless as an officer," thus causing his premature discharge. Collection includes letters of recommendation praising Iliff to Ind. Representative John Hanna from Charles E. Clarke (Captain of the 17th U.S. Infantry) and W.E. Horton (1st. Lieutenant of the U.S. Army), a letter (1878) from Iliff to Pres. Rutherford B. Hayes explaining the circumstances of his discharge and asking for an investigation, and other related materials.
